Manchester Hyatt or US Grant?
Will be in San Diego for 4 nights in August. Looking for a central hotel within walking distance of restaurants in Gaslamp district. Which hotel to chose?

I have no experience with the US Grant, but just returned from a 3 night stay at the Manchester Hyatt. It's a beautiful property - absolutely gorgeous lobby and the bar on the 40th floor has amazing views. All of the public spaces are very well maintained. The fitness center is also extremely nice - plenty of cardio machines and a nice variety of weightlifting circuit stations.
The rooms at the Hyatt were standard Hyatt rooms. Furnishings very nice and a comfy bed. The bathroom looked like it needed a little updating, but it was clean and that was the most important thing! I did think the walls were a tad thin - could hear the person next door blowing their nose.
I stayed in the Harbor Tower in room 2236. It had 2 double beds and a killer view over the water.
It's a bit of a walk to Gaslamp restaurants, but totally doable. We were a bit tired after walking all day long and took the easy route by taking a short cab ride...but that was because we were lazy and not because it's a difficult walk.

both hotels are gorgeous.
US Grant Hotel is a older luxury Starwood property that was beautiful refurbished..
Manchester Grand Hyatt has great views and resort property..being that its August, I would go with the Manchester Grand Hyatt.
SD in August is beyond wonderful..native and it don't get any better.
Try and go to the Del Mar Racetrack, boogieboard at La Jolla Shores with the somewhat warm ocean water and have lots of fish tacos and Pacifico beers.
Make sure you see a Padres game at Petco Park down the street from your hotel.

Stay at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego. Its on the Gaslamp Quarter’s Waterfront. Party like a rock star in the heart of the quarter, then trade the raucous nightlife for the tranquility of the waterfront Hyatt. Enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep. NO driving required. The next day you have all the water-sport and boating options at the Hyatt’s front door.

What they said about the Grand Hyatt. Our room overlooked the USS Midway, and access to the Gaslamp is easy. You must go to the Top of the Hyatt bar, the views are amazing. Skip the appetizers, go for drinks. Sally's restaurant is pleasant there as well.

I would stay at the Hyatt in August - as has been noted it is on the water and will be lovely in August. It is a bit more of a walk to the gaslamp - I have even taken a cab in the past - but you can walk - or take one of the many people doing pedi-cabs
