My husband and I spent Thanksgiving at Auberge du Soleil several years ago. It was lovely but way, way overpriced. Our $550 per night (excluding taxes and service) overlooked a tennis court! Ack. Breakfasts are great, lunches, too. The balcony of the restaurant is a wonderful place at sunset with a glass of champagne. Dinner is good but, then, there are better restaurants in the area.
FYI, Meadowood is very family oriented. Not my cup of tea for a romantic respite.
I don't mind paying high rates either; I prefer to get sufficient value, however, and don't feel as if I did at Auberge.
If you're not hooked on Napa, you might consider Ventana Inn in Big Sur.

Another vote for Meadowood. Someone said it was family oriented. We have stayed there four times in the past five years and never thought of it as being family oriented. In fact, it felt just the opposite. It was very quiet and peaceful. Our rooms there have always felt very private and secluded, and very romantic. The grounds are wonderful and the food and service are outstanding. Auberge du Soleil has great views, nicely furnished rooms, good food, but otherwise has the feel of a luxury resort, which we did not find to be that relaxing the one time we stayed there. The Villagio also has very nice rooms, and is certainly less money, but its setting is not what you would call romantic for a special occasion like a tenth anniversary.

If you want an expansive facility with tennis, swimming pool, spa, etc, Meadowood and Auberge are the top choices... and nothing in Sonoma comes close to them.
If you are willing to consider a smaller but romantic and secluded B&B/inn, check out Oak Knoll, Castle in the Clouds, and Milliken Creek. All are in the Luxury catagory.

I recently stayed at the Healdsburg Hotel and went wine tasting in the Deer Creek area for our 25th wedding anniversary. Fantastic wine tasting, a spa with massages, great restaurants. The rooms are stark but cosy, which we like, but the beds were so comfortable and cozy. Around $200-$300/night. They also have a pool and jacuzzi.

Sonoma is much more romantic than Napa. My favorite is the Sonoma Mission Inn (but you HAVE to get a suite).
Hot tubs with hundreds of jets right in your room, great bed & sheets, balconies overlooking the mountains and vineyards, fireplace, CD player complete with romantic music, the BEST food, great spa services, golf course, yoga classes and early morning bike tours through the vineyards.

Sonoma Mission Inn is very nice, but despite many restorations, it will never be Auberge du Soleil or Meadowood. Of the two, I prefer the latter. Suggest anyone looking for a place to stay in the California wine country check out Fodors wine country destination guide and the rants and raves section on the various lodgings available.
