LGA to Midtown Transportation
First time to NYC - going with friends-there are 4 of us. Going April 11-15. Should we take a cab rom LGA to our hotel or should we hire a car? Would it be cheaper for the 4 of us to hire a car? Any suggestions of a reliable and affordable car company if this is an option. We are staying at Hotel Mela if that makes a difference.

You can't get 4 in a cab with luggage. You would need two cabs which will be about $50.00 total. I Town Car will cost you about $100.00 which is twice as much but worth every penny. If you are all traveling fairly light like a bag apiece and your carry on you should be able to get it in the car. Be sure to make your reservation through your hotel and tell them it will be 4 of you in the car so they will get a car big enough. They will probably get a SUV with 6 seats. Good luck.

I think it depends on how much luggage you have and whether there are any larger minivan cabs available. A cab will be about $30-35. A car service will most probably insist you get a larger car or minivan so it won't be cheaper than a taxi. I like limores.net

A car service is almost always more expensive than a taxi to LaGuardia, but not that much ($50 versus $35--$40). If you don't have too much luggage, you can certainly put 4 people in a taxi. Since most taxis are Crown Victorias, they have enormous trunks. A car service might bump you up to the next higher model, but most all of them use large 4-door sedans that can accommodate 4 people plus a small suitcase apiece.

Editor if these ladies are like most ladies and don't travel light then get unlucky at the cab line and get a cab with a spare in the trunk then 4 ladies will not fit in one cab with their luggage. I have done this trust me many times. I have found it best to call the concierge at the hotel and ask for a 6 passenger SUV which will cost about $100.00 and be much more comfortable than two bouncing yellow cabs and a driver who speaks no English.

Go Travel if you put 4 in a NYC yellow cab with luggage then you had no more than 4 carry on bags. If you had 4 regular checked bags and anything else trust me you didn't get 4 and your luggage in one cab. Of course I have only been from Mississippi to NYC over 40 times so I probably don't know. As you Go Travel you probably know more about cabs from a/p's in NYC than anyone else. Next time you go with 4 carry your normal 4 pieces of luggage and a carry on or just your 4 pieces then get a cab with a lot of junk in the trunk and tell me what happens.

A car service is no less expensive than a cab. And a cab will fit 4 passengers (one in front with the driver) and a reasonable amount of luggage.
If you each have a large suitcase (25/26") plus a carry-on you may have trouble unless you hold a couple of the carry-ons on your lap. But - since you trip is only a few days I'm assuming you won;t have a huge amount of luggage.
If your stuff won;t fit in a regular cab in may fit in the van type - and the dispatcher will get you one of those from the waiting lot.

Note that many of the mini-van taxis have LESS luggage space than the sedans. If the mini-van has the rear benchseat, then it doesn't have much room at all for luggage.
If you have a reasonable amount of luggage, you should be able to fit in 1 taxi. If not, a 2nd is right there.
