JFK to Midtown for 4 adults - need two taxis?
We are four normal sized adults each with a good sized piece of luggage. We plan to take a taxi from JFK to our hotel in mid-town. Should we plan on two taxis? I know many of the taxis are now mini-vans that would appear large enough for four with luggage. Can four adults with luggage fit reasonably comfortably into one taxi?

There are minvan taxis, but they are a minority. We fit 2 adults, 2 teens and luggage in 1 taxi although, our luggage generally consists of 1 large and 2 smaller bags. WHen you go to the taxi stand, if you can't all fit in one, then take 2. They usually are coming one right after another. I would not worry about this, just get to the taxi line, and see what happens.

If one of you goes up to the dispatcher while the others get in line, tell him/her you need a larger car. That should be more comfortable. In a regular one you'll be squeezed with someone sitting in a tight middle seat.

Four adults can fit in a cab - the problem might be the luggage - depending on what you have brought. If you have 4 small cases you will be fine - but I have seen some people traveling with steamer trunks lately - or the modern equivalent - body bags.
Will they all fit in the trunk of your car - that's a reasonable test.
