Can anyone tell me of a laundry where we can do our own washing in NYC around midtown/Times Square? If not is there a laundry/dry cleaner around this area?

There are several places but your exact address/or block - say, 45th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, would help us suggest a location.
Or you can enter your address in google maps and click on search nearby - enter laundry and places will come up.

If you are staying in a full-service hotel or B&B (and not a hostel, for instance), they may be able to handle it for you. Even a hostel might.

Many people in non-residential areas (like Times Square) drop their laundry off at the cleaners - who wash it by the pound and will typically deliver back to your hotel or apartment.

The Times Square area is surprisingly residential once you go as far west as 8th Avenue. There are literally dozens of laundries and dry cleaners along 8th and 9th Aves. No reason to pay $6 per piece to have the laundry done at the hotel. Almost all laundromats and dry-cleaners in NYC have a drop-off service where you pay the by pound, as nytraveler suggests. That seems more convenient to me. You can usually get 2-day service.
