Only been/stayed in Vegas once for my godson's wedding, doubt that I'll return. After a quick check on a couple of websites, it would appear that hotel rates double + over the weekend. So stay mid-week if you're looking for a bargin... you should be able to get a room for under $50 per night before taxes on the strip.

www.cheapovegas.com gives great advice on hotels and things to do in Vegas. Check online and see who ha lower rates on the strip. Imperial Palace is more "cheap and nasty" but there are other places along the strip that are not horribly expensive if you shop around. Monte Carlo, Tropicana, Flamingo, Barbary Coast, etc.

You should be able to get great deals in Las Vegas in August mid-week. Very hot at that time of year. The Mirage and Paris are nice and centrally located. Sometimes the Venetian runs great sales and the rooms are large and beautiful.

I've gotten rooms at the Flamingo for $60 in summer. Never had a bad room there, either.

Not sure how low your budget goes, but you should be able to get into a terrific place in mid-August (mid week) for around 100 or less.

Cheapovegas, which Christie mentioned, will give you a great overall views of places to stay. I would just say if you can get a "decent" place for 60 or 70, but a really nice place for 100, I'd go for the 100 if you can afford it.

If you narrow it down to 2 or 3 places, post again and I'm sure you'll get lots of opinions. Speaking of opinions, tripadvisor has lots.

My friends and I enjoy staying at Excalibur, which is at the southern end of the Strip. A bit campy, it is Vegas, and we choose it as a place to get together and catch up on the past year.

Another place you might want to try out is the Paris and the Aladdin hotels, both of which are right across from the Bellagio.

But I agree with the luvtotravel, August, especially mid-week, should be über budget friendly, and you might even be able to stay at the more posh places for much less than you'd think!

I looked at some places in June, and Ballys was actually cheaper than Flamingo. It used to be the other way around. Excallibur does have good rates most mid weeks (usually Sun - Thurs nights) in summer. I've seen Barbary Coast with reasonable rates also.

We find we enjoy ourselves more when we stay mid-Strip: Bally's or nearby.

Keep in mind that some casinos are on huge properties and that, as a result, the casino next door is often several blocks away.

Go mid-week to get the best rate.
