Ginger--
to be close to Mallory Sq,the best place is PIER HOUSE Hotel-not much of a beach, but very elegant hotel....
My Favorite Place in Key West is a small Inn called the MARQUESA-it has no kids, private pool area but you need a car to get to Mallory Sq.....very Elegant and wonderful

Ginger - There's a newly enforced law in Key West that forbids rentals for less than 30 days by anyone who doesn't have a license, so if you rent a house or condo be sure it's licensed.
The Galleon is near Mallory Square and has timeshares that rent to non-owners but it's difficult to book. They have two bedroom units with fully-equipped kitchens, so you might check them out.
Andy is right about the Marquesa Hotel being really nice, but I don't know if they have refrigerators in the rooms. You do NOT need a car to get from there to Mallory Square...it's only a few blocks away.
I've heard great things about Key West Realty and At Home in Key West so you might consider contacting either or both of them. They both have websites and will ensure you get property that's licensed.

Ocean Key Resort is a wonderful consideration. We loved it! We stayed at the Marquesa once and also found it wonderful but our room didn't have a kitchen or small fridge but I would bet you could get a fridge upon request. It is only 3 or 4 blocks from Mallory Square.

I also love the Hyatt and Ocean Key House, but they usually have lots of children. You might consider a B&B...most cater to adults only.
We've never been pestered by the timeshare folks...we do get one phone call each week we stay, but just decline the offer of a "tour" or further info.

Another vote for the Marquesa. It is walking distance to Mallory Square. Get a junior suite if you can. I don't remember a refrigerator but they have everything else. It is top of the line with a great restaurant on the premisis. They also serve you breakfast on your porch (at a cost).

I'm going to recommend the Marquesa also. It has a great pool (actually there are 2 pools) and courtyard area. 2 blocks from Duval. No children under 12 allowed. Porches or balconies for almost every room. GORGEOUS rooms. No refrigerator, but your ice bucket is filled by the staff every day (sometimes twice) and there is a grocery store less than a block away where you can grab deli or sandwiches when you want to save money. Only drawback, it's not cheap (I think our room was around $240/night - junior suite). But in my opinion, worth every penny. You can check it out for yourself at www. marquesa.com
