Family room(s) in New York city

Hi, I'm visiting New York City for 4 nights in October with my wife and 2 teenage kids aged 16 and 13. My preference would be 2 rooms or a suite but I'm on a bit of a budget. I've looked at the Madison but am seeing very mixed reviews. I've also tried the Herald Square Hotel but it's full. I'm looking to fall back on the Holiday Inn midtown for a 2 beeded room at $150. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I could probably go to $200.
Sorry for the longest question in the world, thanks for your help.

Best choice: Radio City Apartments. It's not new or glamorous and the decor could use upodating but it's clean, safe and comfortable. For well under your target price you can get a one bedroom suite. Futon couch in the LR folds out into a double bed for the kids and you and the wife have a separate BR. There's a kitchenette and a big dining table with plenty of space. Kids stay up late to eat microwave popcorn while the adults get some needed rest (that's how it worked for me!). It's on 49th between 5th and 6th (or very close) and is surprisingly quiet even though it's only a five minute walk from Times Square.

Radio City Apartments is between 6th and 7th - good safe location. You might also check out the BEacon at 75th and Broadway.

I second the Beacon they have both 1 and 2 bedroom suites. Just stayed there in Sept. and we'll be back.

Rooms are relatively large, clean, and all have kitchenette. Plus the hotel is across the street from the best grocery I've even been in - breakfast in the room was a pleasure!

Also check out any of the Manhattan East Suites properties. Most were NYC apartments converted to suite hotels that are not much more expensive than a single room at a regular hotel. Web site is

Try the Kimberly Suites Hotel. You should be able to find a nice 2 room suite with kitchen for around $200. That would come with a sofa bed. Even if it's a bit more, it's in a completely safe, central area, and a beautiful hotel to boot.

Another possibility is the Embassy Suites in the Financial District.

Check www.biddingfortravel; at one time, the ES was the only hotel being awarded by Priceline in its neighborhood and category, and so was a safe "bet" for Priceline bidding for families. Otherwise, Priceline won't meet your needs, as its rooms will usually only accommodate 2 people. Unless you got a good deal on TWO rooms . . .

We paid $159.00 a night in August 2001 for the Doubletree Suites in Times Square. That was AAA rate--it was perfect for our family with 2 teens.

I too would recommend the Doubletree. We stayed there awhile ago (with teenagers) and it was great. Right in Times Square. At the time it even included a full breakfast. Just beware the porno on the master bedroom tv.
