Aloha, RiverRanger:
Some observations from our first visit to Kauai in September (4 nights Princeville, 4 nights Poipu):
- Although Kauai is a relatively small island, it takes longer than you expect to get around. There's really just one major road, and (relatively) a lot of traffic at peak times. We were glad we split our stay so we had more time for actual exploring, less time just "getting there".
- We did what I bet would be almost the last sailing trip of the season along the Napali coast. We went from Hanalei with Capt. Sundown: weather was windy from a nearby tropical storm. They almost cancelled, but in the end we sailed with a full boat (15 people). The trip out from Hanalei was thrilling -- full sail, and a following sea so that you felt the boat lifted and flying forward pretty fast. Saw dolphins, turtle, flying fish. When we got to the end of the cliffs, we anchored for lunch and to snorkel, but the sea was very stirred up, with poor visibility and stronger currents than usual. It was the trip back that was really "interesting": motoring only, into the wind and the sea. I was glad that I don't get seasick (some folks did) and that the water was warm, because it broke over us continually! :-0 We were glad when we got back to Hanalei (that leg took 2 hours) but have wonderful memories of that day! And great photos, too.
- We stayed in a condo next to the Hyatt, and wished we had stayed AT the Hyatt. It was lovely (terrific "lagoon" swimming pools, the beautiful Sea Terrace room, so much more).
- Sunset is around 6:30, so that may cut short your afternoon plans.
- Spent a wonderful afternoon driving up Waimea Canyon. It's very spectacular, worth taking time to explore. We were sorry not to have allowed enough time for hiking from Kokee Lookout (last section of road was closed, and I understand from the Blue Bible that it closes often.)
- Loved Kilauea and the lighthouse, all the birds, fantastic shoreline views. Nice village too, with a bakery and store (where I bought fab golden papaya and apple bananas).
- We explored the beaches from Hanalei to Ke'e, and the water at most was too rough for any snorkeling except for a sheltered part of Ke'e. We really liked Haena Beach Park -- sat for ages just watching the beautiful surf. (And also had the best smoothie ever from the catering truck there!)
And yes folks, I know, that trip report is past due. But I won't forget -- I have my journal to prompt the memories, though most of it is still so vivid in my mind's eye...
