Kauai Beach question

How are Tunnels and Kee Beaches in the wintertime or springtime? My sister is planning a trip to Kauai and Maui for four nights each. She is going to take a helicopter ride to see the Napali coast but I was telling her how great the snorkeling is at both of those beaches in the summertime. Is it still possible to snorkel at those beaches when it's not summertime? I know it's not possible to take boat trips around that coastline in the winter due to the rough surf.
Thanks!

Ashley,
Ke'e Beach should be fine because of the lava reef that protects it.But I am not sure about Tunnels. We never did the heli. tour to Napali Coast and regreted it..so make sure to tell her that it is a MUST!!My friend who used to live in Kauai told us that we missed the most beautiful views by not doing the heli. tour.

<font color="blue">Ashley<font color="black">, you must be refering to the mainland seasons as Hawaii only has 2 seasons, &quot;winter&quot; and summer.

We have traveled to Hawaii from the mainland's spring and fall and found fall generally to have better conditions than the spring. Ke'e beach varies from rough to calm or ((R))((R))in the spring, so I would expect mainland-springtime to be more favorable than mainland-wintertime, see <font color="blue">Kal<font color="black">'s or <font color="blue">Gyppielou<font color="black">'s previous &quot;wintertime&quot; reports.
:S-
If Ke'e doesn't work out due to rough conditons or ((R)), we usually head south to Lydgate or ((#))((H))Poipu or Salt Pond Beach Park.</font></font></font></font></font></font>

Most of our beaches here on the north shore of Kaua`i are risky in the winter (and our winter surf conditions have already begun). We've often seen Ke`e when it looks like a boiling cauldron -- and the reef is no protection under those circumstances. Ditto for Makua. When winter surf hits, it can hit any part of this island -- even the &quot;baby lagoon&quot; at Lydgate Park can be impacted.

We do, however, have those rare winter days filled with sunshine and calm seas (emphasis on the word &quot;rare&quot;!). 8-)

I just got back from Kauai a couple of days ago...sob...and I snorkled for the first time at Poipu beach in front of the Marriott Waiohai where we stayed. The first thing I saw was a big turtle so I was really excited to try some of the other great spots I read about. We took a drive to all the suggested spots and the water was really choppy and not suitable for swimming. Even Lydgate where there is a seawall protecting the beach was wild! We wound up back at Poipu for the rest of the trip. Good luck to your sister!

Ashley,
Just remember..if the beaches are rough on the North Shore..they will probably be calm on the South Shore..and plenty of ((R))'s at Wailua Falls or Spouting Horn.

Ditto Auntie M....BUT...Some gorgeous shots of Tunnels and No Shore beaches when 20-30 ft waves hit in the winter.

Especially when the whole Hanalei Valley fills up with seaspray....:-X

As long as we've veen going over each Nov/Dec/Jan still never done NoShore cruise due to hi surf probs...great place to look at...not to up chuck in!

I can tell you that none of the north shore beachesf were swimmable when we stayed a week in Halalei last May. The closest swimmable beach was Anini, which is not all that great for snorkeling.

Kaua'i is bad enough in the summer! WHY would anyone want to go there in the winter? I guess one would need &quot;balls&quot; to do that, eh Kal? /:-)
