I'll already be in the Hamptons for Memorial Day week when two adult friends arrive at JFK.

Does anyone have any personal experience with the various transportation options from JFK to Bridgehampton?

Jitney, shuttles, car service, train?

Car service will be a fortune.

And Jitney isn;t convenient - since you have to trek out to meet it on a street corner. Often the Jitney is full or almost - so you have to have a reservation - and with landing times at JFK as they are it's definitely a risk.

If they don;t have too much luggage the easiest is to take the Air Train ($5 each) to the Jamaica station of the LIRR and just catch the train from there (where I assume you can meet them).

Don;t know about shuttle vans from the Hamptons - you could look on the JFK website to see what companies they list and ask for prices.

Many thanks. I don't want to drive all the way west from Bridge to pick them up ... so I'm trying to find a convenient & cost-effective way to get them to me (at my expense).

I might just bite the bullet and get a car for them, but I will check the shuttle options.

We have friends/relatives who use the Jitney all the time. It's not cheap though. Any possibility these folks can fly into Islip? What about their renting a car? Won't they need wheels once they get to Bridgehampton?

If you want a private car service, you can prob. do better than $200.

NYTraveler's advice to use the Airtrain and transfer to the LIRR would be my choice. Both are easy to find and negotiate. Tickets are easy to buy and the ride is pretty direct. LIRR timeschedules are on-line http://lirr42.mta.info/index.asp

But frequency of service on the Montauk line of the LIRR stinks. Unless their plane arrives to coincide with one of the trains, they'll waste lots of time waiting around.

For these two people, the train option really isn't an option, for a variety of reasons.

I'll price some car service companies and report my results.

Car services are pricing out at about $170 not including tip. I'm considering suggesting the AirTrain to LIRR option.

If their flight coincides with a train, that's fine. Otherwise the Jitney is really the best option.

But with the Jitney they have the reservation problem. If their plane lands on time and they get to the Jitney they've reserved - it;s fine. But - if the plane is late - or their luggage delayed - and they miss the Jitney they've reserved the next one may be full.

I've taken it several times and it's often full or close to. And this is the Memorial Day weekend we're talking about - not some random weekday - when they would have a much better chance of finding empty seats.

And really, how much less is the Jitney for 2 people?

Each alterantive is either expensive or time consuming and then there is the return trip.

Have you considered a car rental?
