Planning a trip for a group ages 5 to 65 what island?

We're in the initial planning for a family trip. Thinking of Hawaii or Mexico. My husband and I prefer quiet, non-hotel or condo scene, nature, boogie-boarding.We typically rent a house. Kids prefer action (surfing, restaurants). Grandkids just like pools and nice beaches. Any suggestions what island we should be looking at? My husband and I usually vacation in Mexico, but thought Hawaii might be a good choice for this trip. All together, there would be 8 -10 people. We do have family in Hilo, so I'm also looking at the Big Island, but it requires a stop to get there from Seattle.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Not exactly "quiet" but Waikiki-Honolulu offers everything else you mention. There is so much to see & do on Oahu. And it's an easy island to get to and get around.

Maui, based somewhere near Lahaina, would be my other suggestion.

Oahu is a great island to start on since it has so many things to do for everyone. Not sure if there are any houses to rent in Waikiki but there may be on the North Shore.

I would narrow it down to some locations on each island you are interested in. Such as Kona on the Big Island and Lahaina on Maui. Then check on vrbo.com for the size house you are looking for. You could also do a couple of 2 bedroom condo units.

Or, on the Big Island, a bit further north on the Kohala coast. There are interesting activities at the many resorts and beaches, and you are near enough to explore the charming North Kohala area, Waimea, Kealakekua, as well as Kona, Volcano, and of course, Hilo. The Big Island has many fantastic restaurants, as well as great natural beauty and historical sites. Hilo is a charming town and has the education Tsunami Museum and a new space center. http://www.downtownhilo.com/. There are so many wonderful towns to explore, coffee plantations, old general stores.

The Big Island is quite special. But all the islands are!
