Jekyll Island in Georgia. Very rich in history, beautiful estates, great B&B's to stay in, beaches, great restaurants, etc...

Also, it's not an island, but just a short drive from Jekyll is the oldest US city, St.Augustine.

St. Augustine is not exactly secluded, but it is a fabulous place. The beaches just beyond there are very nice -- St. Augustine Beach, Anastasia Island. And the prices are very reasonable. I don't know if it's possible to stay away from the condos.
Sanibel and Captiva are wonderful on Florida's west coast. Key West unfortunately does not have the beaches. Summers are very hot in Florida but the islands get the ocean breezes. You can watch the sea turtles nest in Melbourne, Florida.
Seaside is a fascinating beach community in Florida.
We live along the St. Petersburg coasts. The city of St. Petersburg has undergone a recent renovation that is really spectacular. I've been stunned (I live in Tampa) to see the night life they have and the wonderful building of their downtown waterfront with shops and restaurants. The nearby beaches in Treasure Island have interesting 1950s beach vernacular architecture, and low prices, especially in the summer. Lots here for families with children. I own a cottage on Sunset Beach at the southern end of Treasure Island -- we succesfully banned the building of high-rises on our little beach. But there are scant hotels.
