Is airfare from LAX to Hawaii always so expensive, $700?

I was just checking around for a possible trip in Feb, and was stunned that the lowest airfare from San Diego was $787 and LAX was $679. Are these typical rates? Thank you!

You are looking way too soon. I have been to Hawaii 7 times-from LAX and price has always been in the $300-$400 range. Expedia has good prices for package deals, but again too early for good prices there either.

$300 to $400 sounds about right from L.A. or San Francisco. Try Hawaiian or Aloha. Good fares a little farther inland from places like Phoenix, Denver, or SLC run $400 to $600.

It is probably too early, but I checked Aloha from Orange Co. to Honolulu for February and the RT price was $450 with tax.

Waaay too early to look for a Feb booking. Prices are always set artificially high that far ahead in time. Try looking around in Dec or January, you'll see rates go down; Feb is typically a low demand month so you'll likely to get a $350-400 rate.

Went to the Big Island in November and booked through American Airlines Vacations. We stayed 7 nights and airfare for $629 per person from LAX and our flight was direct to Kona. This was like getting the airfare free. We are going again (same trip at same hotel) in July and it is like $1100 something each. (Double) I think end of the year must be a great time to get really good fares.

Thank you everyone, the news is very encouraging! We need 4 tkts, so I was fearing we wouldn't be able to make the trip, or else have to downgrade accomodations. Thanks!

we found specials on Haiwaian Airlines for 700 for 2 people including all the taxes (for may 19-26 from LAX to kauai) when expedia and american and everyone else was quoting 600-700 a person.

I suggest bookmarking their homepage and checking every few days...it helped us!

Also, you can try flying RT into HNL or Maui (OGG) and taking an interisland flight (booked separately) Aloha and Hawiaian start at $63 for their supersavers before taxes.......It sometimes works out cheaper to book 2 rt tickets for 1 trip.....
