We just returned from Maui, yes it was August but it was hot. I couldn't have handled a place without air conditioning. On another note the last time we visited was in November and then we didn't need the air conditioning at all. I would say in May you will still need the air if you aren't comfortable without one at one

We stayed at Valley Isle Resort in Kahana last week. It's right on the beach. We first wished we had A/C when we arrived, but if you open the lanai doors and the front door (it had a security screen) the breeze cooled the place down considerably. Plus we had several fans. Only the bathroom got really hot and steamy when the shower was running (no exhaust fan). A/C would be nice, but we managed. Besides, we didn't spend a lot of time in the condo anyway.

Hell yes! I live in 112-120 degree weather now...but in Maui it's very humid and hot...forget about it. Do not settle for ceiling fans, they do nothing for you.
Believe me when I tell you you will have a miserable time trying to sleep with out it.

Apparently if a condo has A/C in the living room then the owner obviously realizes it is "necessary" or at least highly desirable or they wouldn't have put it in the LR at all.
A/C is more than "helpful" when you are in a highly humid area and Maui certainly qualifies.
For get about what your ancestors were "just fine" with (that probably includes fireplaces for heating and oil lamps for lightingif you go back far enough).
This is today. The money you spend on an air conditioned space will seem like a bargain if you get somewhere and don't have it IMO.
