inexpensive lodging in oahu

Ilima, Ilikai, Waikiki Royal Garden, Sheraton Princess Kaualani - which is better? Has anyone stayed at these places? I have an 8 year old granddaughter and am looking for a clean, safe room that does have a pool. What's a better option?

Thanks for your help!

My choice would be Sheraton PK. It is directly across the street from the best part of Waikiki Beach. Not far to walk with the beach gear. Safe, fun area. Lots of places to eat, shop, and find free entertainment (hula shows, movies on the beach, etc.) Avoid Ilikai. They are having some kind of dispute over the electric bill; last I heard some units might get electricity shut off. Also, long walk to beach.

I like The Hawaiiana Hotel or The Breakers on BeachWalk. They are smaller hotels, a few blocks from Fort de Russey park and the beach. It's a modest place but there were kids staying at Hawaiiana both times I was there and seemed to be having a ball. It's set in pretty gardens with two pool areas.

The Ilikai is having problems. The lender foreclosed on a few hundred units bought by an investor who was having difficulty reselling. The hotel operation in the buildings was threatening to lay off all staff and close.

Wow! Thanks for the info. One final question - how about Banyan - I found a great deal through HomeAway. Looks good, about a block from the beach on the south end. If not this place, then I guess I'm going to PK!

The Banyan is also a good location. Because these are condominiums, you will have a kitchen which will be convenient. There is no restaurant on the premises, but lots of restaurants nearby.

I would like to suggest one of the condos at Ilikai Marina - we've rented one there (vrbo) for a week for $950. But now you have me worried that our rental will be affected by the Ilikai Hotel's problems! It is separate, isn't it?

Thanks all for your comments. I booked through with Banyan through a private party on HomeAway. Cheap - 725 including tax and cleaning. I'll let you know how it goes!

I stayed at the Ilima. It was very clean, had a pool and a sauna. The pool was small. It was handy to have the kitchenette and the free parking.

Thanks for all your suggestions. The one bedroom at the Banyan was just fine. Not a palace and not the other extreme either. Clean and a very nice group that I rented from - Darmic Holidays through homeaway.com.
