Waikiki - where is the best place to stay?

We are going to Hawaii in late July and want to spend 3 days in Honolulu - Waikiki. Where should we stay? I heard that near the International Market is good. What about the beach there? Any preferred beach?

Also, we'd like a nice friendly hotel with a kitchennette if possible (for cooking breakfast and lunches). Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Do you have a price in mind?

The Hawaiiana Hotel was recommended to me on this BB & have stayed there twice. It's a beautiful, budget place that fits what you want. BUT there is a large construction project on Beach Walk now, so I'm not sure how that might affect the hotel.

The International Market is smack-dab in the very busiest part of town, and a couple blocks in from the beach, so yes that would be an OK location but certainly not the only choice.

I have the name of another budget hotel with kitchenettes (it is along the canal) at home (sorry don't remember the name).

A bit more expensive but I liked the look of the New Otani at the far end of the beach, down by the park and the zoo.

The beach at Waikiki is fairly narrow and long. It's all very nice. My preferred beach is the one closest to my hotel!

Aston Waikiki Sunset is really nice. All of the rooms have a kitchen. All of the rooms have one or two bedrooms.

It is located near the most popular section of Waikiki Beach called Kuhio Beach.

The entire length of Waikiki Beach is two miles.

The Outrigger on the Beach is great! And it's directly across the street from the International Marketplace. The beach there is fabulous!! And the breakfast buffet is yummy.

I was thinking of Ilima Hotel above. It is a budget condo kind of place. Not fancy but some families posted favorably for having a kitchen. www.ilima.com

And the website for Hawaiiana Hotel is www.hawaiianahotel.com It's a sweet kind of old-fashioned place. It fits the friendly with kitchenette requirements but again, the rooms here are quite basic (although there are some that are remodeled and priced to reflect it).
