Can't decide. Staying in Charleston in Nov, stumped between Harborview Inn, Governors House and John Rutledge. Looking for charm, location.

I guess it depends on your priorities. Do you want private parking? What do you plan to do while you are here?

we do not plan on having a car. maybe a rental for one day to explore outside of the city. we prefer a small charming hotel in a good location. we have read toooo many reviews at tripadvisor etc. need a little guidance, thanks

All 3 have both. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them based on your criteria. As stated, Harborview is on the Charleston Harbor, and you can request a room with a water view 9don't assume they all do). The other two are in old historic (beautiful) buildings. I think you need to decide what amentiess appeal to you most. While TA has lots of info, I think some people just go there to take out life's frustrations on others. What activites are you planning?

Make a pro and con list on paper of each. That should help you clear up your confusion.

I have many guests that also stay at Planters Inn. My son was married last October at Folly Beach and many of the people from my daughter-in-law's party stayed at Harbourview Inn. They had very nice things to say.

Many of her family also stayed at the beach at the Water's Edge Inn. It's a few years old and the service is incredible. You would want a car but it would be may be worth it if you like to walk the beach - you can ride bikes (they have them at the B&B) to the lighthouse or go to the State Park - lots of shells and coral. Go downtown during the day for shopping on King Street and dining (FIG is a must try) and stay at the beach for relaxation.

The Harbourview is fabulous, as is it's location on the water. If you don't want to spring for the harbor view (we don't), the other rooms are just fine. Some do look out on a power grid BUT the windows are done up in a way that you'd never notice unless you pull the drapes back. We go up on the rooftop patio, to enjoy the view from there. I haven't stayed at the other hotels you mention so I can't compare. Be sure to eat at SNOB and Magnolia's!

Harbourview Inn area is very busy b/c of Waterfront Park. Small area - but congested.
I think I'd vote for the John Rutlege House. The rooms look exquisite and you are right on Broad Street. Step across the street into the "South of Broad" area.

You can walk a few blocks East to Oak for a splurge-worthy dinner.

lantana, we probably don't have to worry much about congestion in November, you think? Now, we were there in August, and the area did have a lot of people about then, kids playing in the fountain across the street at the Park, etc. but we loved it. The location is great for walking out the door, turn left, and it's just a few steps to the Pier at Waterfront Park, to swing on the swings and look for dolphins. The historic district of Charleston can be hot, cold, deserted, congested ... it's all good! I always love it ...

Well there probably is not congestion today, lol! I'm wondering which was picked, and what did you think?

we stayed in Harborview last June. It was an excellent location. The rooms were lovely and the amenities even better. The common areas are large and lend themselves to meeting other guests if you so choose. They served excellent, delicious breakfasts either in the lobby area, dining area or on the rooftop. Wine and cheese were served every afternoon---and delicious cookies & candy in the evening. Haven't been to the others. We were satisfied, because we could walk everywhere we wanted to go including fine restaurants and the marketplace.

elsiemoo - in November, you're right, the park won't be as busy - but I just meant that the corner that Harbourview Inn is on is congested w/ pedestrians and slow-moving traffic. I drive by there often in the afternoon and find it unappealing but yes, it is a great location for many things - restaurants mentioned before like SNOB and Magnolia's, as well as Cypress (gorgeous bar) and a lunchtime fave, Blossom. Oak is close by on Broad Street and don't miss Baked around the corner for incredible homemade cakes, cookies, apricot streusel bars w/ a touch of rosemary ♥ and whoopie pies! http://bakednyc.com/
