Hotel advice for Maui

We have a trip planned to Oahu next March and would like to go to Maui for 3 nights. Very undecided as to what area we want to stay in Maui (have already booked Outrigger Reef for Oahu because it was free). I have been to Maui before, stayed at Wailea, went to Lahaina but did not get to the Hana side or Haleakala Summit (or anywhere in the SE part of the island). Would like to do that this time. Does anyone have suggestions for a good "central" area that would get us in either direction without much driving? We are not using time share on this trip, so I guess we could switch hotels and stay in different areas. Anyone who knows, please advise. Much appreciated... Cakelady

Kaanapali is pretty far from Hana & Haleakala. The closest place I can think of is the cottages available for rent on the north shore from Mama's Fish House (fabulous restaurant). There are photographs and rates at www.mamasfishhouse.com

There are also some major resort hotels in Kihei. It's a little closer to the Hana & Haleakala area than Wailea or Kaanapali. Have a great trip!

Not to be contrary, but there are no major (or minor) resort hotels in Kihei (and only 2 hotels, the Maui Coast and the Mana Kai, to my knowledge), which is primarily a town with condos in the middle and up price range. It's also contiguous to Wailea so the time saving in traveling between either and Hana or Haleakala is negligible. The area, Kihei and Wailea, has great beaches, restaurants, accommodations, weather. You'll need to drive if you want to stay south. While Paia is close to your named destinations, I find the "cottages" at Mama's rather pricey. And, in March, you cannot plan on ocean swimming up north.

There are many places to stay in the Paia area other than Mama's cottages. Do a google search and you will end up with cottages, houses, etc. Try alternativehawaii.com too. You could always spend the entire time in Hana! Not everyone's cup of tea, but that's where I'd go on Maui with three days, especially if I'd been there before. There are lots of cottage rentals there too.

Tons of BB all over the place.

If motels are ok with you, several are in Kahului/Wailuku area right on the main road. Much closer to getting you started out to Haleakala and Hana than south or west areas.

However, they are motels only, which means a place to sleep and not much more.

The Kula Lodge on the way to Haleakala is a nice place to stay but its "upcountry", nowhere near the beach.
You could easily get to the summit and drive to Hana from this location.
