Help with travel insurance question

My wife and I purchased tickets to Kauai for a trip in March. They were purchased September of last year. We purchased travel insurance with the thought that we would be able to cancel should something come up. I have now been offered a new job halfway across the country and we won't be able to make the trip.

However, in reading the fine print for the travel insurance policy, it clearly states there is no coverage for a simple change in plans. The only option that doesn't involve a health issue is if you have been employed for more than 3 years and are terminated through no fault of your own.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to avoid losing the $1300+ we've spent on the flight. Would you contact the airline directly to see if they would be willing to give a credit for use on future flights? Any suggestions or possible solutions would be GREATLY appreciated.

TIA,
KCCFB

Hello kccfb, I don't know what airline you booked your tickets with but I would call them. I expect that you will be given a credit (less perhaps a charge) and consequently will be able to take this flight within a year. Now whether it is a year from the time you purchased your tickets or a year from the time you were to take the flight I don't know. But the only way you will be able to find out is to call the airline direct and ask. That is the only solution that I know of. Of course you can call the insurance company also but it doesn't sound like you will be covered from what you have said. Best wishes to you in working this out and also regarding your new job and moving to a new location.

If they are non-refundable tickets, you can probably pay a small fee and reschedule at another time.

You'll probably pay a relatively large fee (up to $100 a ticket, depending on the airline and the kind of tickets you have), but you should be able to cancel and get a credit for a future flight. You may have to use the credit within 6 or 12 months though.

Thanks for the responses. As it turns out, I won't have to start my new job until April 2 so the trip to Kauai is still on. We leave a week from Sunday and are ready to leave behind all the snow we've gotten here in North Dakota over the past week. Bring on the sun and the beach!!

That's great news!!!! All travel insurance policies are not alike so you have to read each one very carefully for inclusions/exclusions before buying. Glad it all worked out for you and you'll have a nice break before starting a new job.
