Hi,
I live in the US. I am getting our bases covered: our car insurance account will cover us while we rent a car on our HI vacation, our health insurance will cover us when we're in Hawaii.

QUESTION: Does anything cover for airplane tickets in case we have to delay our trip due to any unforeseen emergencies? Does trip cancellation insurance only cover for our accommodations in HI (as stated by our vacation package specialist)? Do travelers do anything to insure airplane tix?

This is all new to me. Thank you

Go to insuremytrip.com and try out different policies. Then read the fine print on them - they make it easy. Most cover cancellations for illness, death, etc. There are a few who will cover it for any reason - but they cost more.

Most Travel Policies cover only reimburse for actual out of pocket expenses when you have to cancel because of a "covered event" which means if you've purchased full fare refundable tickets the insurance wouldn't apply as you can get a full refund from the airlines.

Also, since airlines allow you to use reuse restricted fare tickets (which most people purchase because they are significantly cheaper)within a year of your original scheduled flight if you pay a small reticketing fee ($100 per ticket) the original cost of that type of ticket may not be covered by your particular travel policy. The only recoverable amount might be the $100 re-ticketing fee. You have to read policy terms to be sure.

As wliwl said you have to read the policy terms carefully to be sure the policy you purchase will insure you against the particular risk you are concerned about. Most Travel policies will not pay if you decide to "just cancel" your trip usually they cover trip cancellation due to illness of one of the insured travellers or in some cases an immediate family member.

www.insuremytrip.com is a great site. You can compare policy terms and premiums on just about every type of travel policy available. Once you determine which policy you need weigh the cost against the probability and the potential financial loss to see if purchasing a policy make economic sense.

You need to read the policy carefully to be sure what it covers. All of the ones I've seen cover non-refundable tickets - or whatever part can't be recovered.

But - you must be sure what conditions are required to qualify.

You can't just change you mind - or have some other event come up. There has to be a real reason for the cancellation - and most will NOT cover forseeable illness related to active pre-existing conditions.

Note that many policies cover only a change fee, and not necessarily the full fare (including fees and taxes), especially the air-fare-only policies.
