Hawaii in January 2004
Please advise. Planning a second honeymoon in January. Possibly Hawaii but weather is a concern. Want warm beach and water. Love to snorkel. Has anyone traveled to any of the islands in January? Can you offer your thoughts? Thanks in advance for your posts.

Aloha! We went to Kihei, Maui a couple Januarys ago. It did rain quite a bit ("quite a bit" being defined as about an hour a day), but we were still in our shorts. The rain made for a very thrilling drive back from Hana where we had spent the day. It rained so hard that the waterfalls had grown exponentially since the drive to the seven pools in the morning. Awesome! The change in scenery was unbelievable. Actually, it was reported in the newspaper the next day that two cars had gone off the steep cliffs, and 2 people had died. So be careful of flash floods, but seeing the torrential flow of muddy water coming down the hills is an amazing site!
Overall, it was a great trip, temperature was still in the low 80s. Depends on where you're coming from as to whether that's what you want.
Good luck!

I have been to Kauai and Maui in January on two seperate occasions and found the water in areas of Kauai chilly, depending on the sun and temperature that day. Whereas, I found Maui waters to be warmer, still a little crisp on a cooler day but refreshing. It totally depends on the depth of water at the particular site and time of day as well. We did also see more rain in Kauai in January that we had on other times of the year, but my understanding is that it rains almost every night there anyway. We enjoyed January for walking and other non-water activities.

This past January (right after the holidays)I spent 6 days on the Kona side of the Big Island and then 4 in Honolulu. It rained once on the BI but not when I was in Oahu. The temperatures were good (low '80's, high '70's). The water was on the cold side in Waikiki. Overall a good time to go. Since school was in session, there were few families with kids and the resorts were quieter than during the summer or spring break periods (the other times I've visited Hawaii).
