Hawaii in January or February
Thinking of visiting Hawaii in either January or February. What can we expect weatherwise? Thinking of doing a cruise of the islands. Any thoughts on best cruises, do and don'ts? Thanks.

No comments on the cruises but we've been to Hawaii in January twice. Both times we had good weather. Both trips we had rain for one day, one trip it was off and on but enough to cancel helicopter rides, the other was a downpour for several hours. We caught up on sleep and shopping on those days and it cleared up nice the next days.

It will be a little cooler and you will probably encounter more rain than in other months, but it will certainly be nothing like the mainland in winter.
My SIL enjoyed the cruise she and my brother did, but you don't get time to see much of the islands.

Feb. is peak season for whales--how fabulous if you could see whales from the deck or better yet, balcony of the ship. Pacific Whale Foundation does the official whale count around Valentines Day--middle if Feb.
We were in Maui and Kauai in Feb.--it is actually considered the rainy season but we were blessed with wonderful weather. Seeing the whales is one of my travel highlights. I would see at least 10 whales every morning from our lanai on Kauai (also a pod of about 100 dolphin)--would love to return in Feb.

I was there 3rd week of January and it was very nice. A couple times there were brief showers, but mostly sunny with warm temperatures, ~75-80F or so.
Myself, I would pick one island & really get to see it, rather than go on a cruise. Personal preference of course, but I'd rather be ON land enjoying the beaches, local scenery, restaurants, island hotels, instead of spending a lot of time on a ship.

We went once in January, years ago. We were on Kauai for one week, and it poured rain everyday. Really a bummer. Too cold to get in the ocean, even with wetsuits.
We went to the big island the following week, and had clear weather, though a bit cool.
