Sure. You go there and place a bet. Then you go outside. A group of high schoolers take the dogs for a walk and they all go to the bathroom (the dogs, not the high schoolers). Then they put them in the starting gate and the dogs start to yelp. Then the fake rabbit comes rolling around, someone opens the trap doors and the dogs run around the track, pretty fast for a dog. After the race you discover that your dog came in last, so you go plunk down another fiver and start all over again.

Now of course there's the question of mistreatment of the animals, but it is a business and unfortunately it goes with the territory. A greyhound is a very gentle creature and a retired racer makes an excellent pet.

While I get Al's point, I'll be a considerate Phoenician and answer the question.

The dog track is located on Washington Street and 40th Street in South Phoenix. It is not far from Scottsdale, downtown Phoenix or anywhere else in the Valley. I believe it is open all year, but hours vary. We also have OTB here, in various bars that have been specially licensed.

I saw nothing to indicate that it was the Phoenix track you are interested in. If it is, then the following info.

It is a nice track - I worked for the company that built it years ago.

Most dog races are 550 or 660 yards. Get the betting guide and study it before you bet -it is different from horse racing in that there are different grades of races. As a dog wins in one grade, it advances to race against better dogs. If it doesn't place in a few races, it drops down a grade.

There are several types of bets, but if you are just starting, then bet to place. you win if the dog comes in first, second, or third.

Believe it or not, it is possible to consistantly win money at the dog track, but like casino gambling, it is best to decide to bet a certain amount of money, and if you loose it, then stop.

Or you could look at it this way:
You go to the track.
You place a bet.
The dog wins or loses.
The dog that wins continues to run.
The dog that loses they kill.
