I remember my mother being petrified that my then 7 y.o. brother would fall over the edge of the canyon. You can not take your eyes off of a pre-schooler in that situation. Very tragic but preventable.

I had my daughter there at 4 yrs. old. Not only did I keep a grip on her at all times, we didn't even go near any edges. Still, it's very sad...

When we were there three years ago, two couples completely ignored their three kids, four to six years old, climbing on and through the railing at an overlook.

Several years ago before we went to Grand Canyon with our 2 teenagers I started wondering if it was possible to fall into the Grand Canyon and posted question regarding that here. Received some interesting responses - I don't know what I was thinking - of course it is possible - I think I imagined a chain link fence around it.

When we actually visited I was horrified at the number of free range children right near the Rim - terrified me.

How awful it must have been for this family - it is hard to imagine anything more horrible to experience.

A friend of mine was there when this happened.
Didnt see the girl fall but heard all the screams, saw the dad go over the edge after her, saw her family gathered around in tears

how tragic!

Amazingly, this is the first child to ever fall into Grand Canyon other than those who were forced to participate in an adult's suicide.

It appears that children have a much greater instinct for the type of danger presented by Grand Canyon.

For you doubters, read "Death in Grand Canyon" an account of all the lives lost at Grand Canyon.

The most danderous activity at Grand Canyon? Photography.

Great book and well worth reading before you go there.
