Frequent Flyer Miles to Italy
Ok, I'm planning my first solo trip to Italy (been there twice before with my husband) for May 2007 and I've been getting lots of really great advice and ideas on how to go about planning it all.
One piece of advice was to fly into one airport and fly out of another so I don't back-track. Originally I was going to fly into Rome and drive up to Tuscany, stay a week and then drive back down to Rome to fly back home. I think the idea of flying into Rome and out of Florence/Milan is great but, is it possible to do that if I'm using Delta's Frequent Flyer Miles? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
~Ahissa

This is do-able (with no extra miles) if Delta flies into both locations, or if Delta has partners flying into these cities.
Open jaws is a good use of Frequent Flier miles, because there is no additional cost or miles. The miles are just "to and from Europe", so you can usually fly to and from any destination in Europe without being charged extra.
I once did this flying into Austria (Vienna) and leaving from Germany (Munich). I was just charged the standard miles for flying to/from Europe.

First of all, you can have an open-jaws type ticket without using more miles than if you flew a "normal" round trip.
On the other side of the coin, however, you may initially not be able to book the trip for the minimum amount of miles. We booked on Continental for October 331 days out, and because we wanted to make sure we got the tickets and definitely wanted to go within a two-week timeframe, we ended up using more than the minimum number of miles. Fortunately, we had more than enough miles for the higher "cost."

We didn't have any luck getting FF tickets to Italy with the minimum amount of miles. We tried as soon as they were availible, but didn't have any luck. This was with United, but I suspect that because Italy is such a popular desitination, this is the case across the industry.
We are now going to Germany on vacation this summer - got tickets in and out of Munich.
Munich isn't really that far from northern Italy, so you might consider flying into and out of Germany or someplace.
