Happy Anniversary to Scarlett & Yankee! 200 yrs...such a milestone!

Rave: great weather we're having! Supposed to be in the 70s today and 60s all next week!

OK now I remember my rants and raves. Must have had a Fodors withdrawl mind fart!

Rave: I finally finished replacing my landscaping after the sewer people tore it all up.

Rave: No more meter reader people. They installed one that can be read from their computers.

Rant: Now the dog will have one less person to get all ticked off at. Poor thing.

Rant: Here is a sampling of FEMA director Mike Brown's emails to New Orleans officials. Brown writes "...can I quit now? Can I go home". He wrote these emails during and after Katrina. If you can open a pdf file look at http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/2005/images/1...own.emails.pdf to see dozens of Mike Brown's emails.

Rave: the things you can find on the internet.

Rant:
the cat we got from the county shelter came with a respiratory problem and was sick the first week. About three years old, she weighed in at a fraction over five pounds.

rave:
Cat is better and is a real charmer. Loves to eat and is putting a little weight on.
She is better now and a real charmer.

rave:
Last week the shelter asked if we could take in a mother cat and her five kittens for two or three weeks. Have them in the laundry room and are a lot of fun.

Rant:
People who don't have their pets spayed or neutered.

Rave: Fodors is up and running, yeah.

Rave: Finished reading Barb's Italy trip report. I loved it. It gives me hope for romance when you're over 50!

Rant: Been a tough week for my younger daughter at college. She will have to make some choices and that's always hard to do.

Rave: Everyone who has been so supportive on the "Did your teen hate college thread?"

Rant: Broken bones. BG sorry to hear about your break. Jocelyn glad to hear your son is such a trooper.

Rave: Faina losing 5 pounds. I keep thinking that I'll wait until after the holidays to go on a diet! LOL

Rave: Scarlett Happy Anniversary.

Rave: Beautiful weather here in So. Cal. A little cooler-feels more like fall.

Hmm, 200 years of marriage. If year one is paper and 50 is gold, 200 would be a barrel of oil?

Ouch and speedy recovery to all the broken bones out there.

Rant: I can no longer ask Lynn to email me her trip report (see Asia board).

Rant: drought. Durham is going to stronger water rules because of the lack of rain.

Rave: The leaves are starting to turn; however, since it's 78F outside, it still doesn't feel like fall. I guess that week of cooler weather did start the leaves agoing.

Rave: I'm going to the NC Fodor's GTG on 11/19.

Rave--Our sons football team had a successful season and made it to the playoffs! The game is tomorrow and I can't wait to watch.

Rave--Bought tickets to a Christmas production in downtown Portland and dinner reservations are already made. Just have to wait a few weeks now.

Rave--Going with girlfriends to a holiday event at a garden center tonight. Live music and Oregon wines

Rave--Kids had a great time on Halloween. My husband said the streets looked like a party at Disney Land, lol!

Rave/Rant--Found a great place to go for short hikes that is really close to the house. This morning two ladies had 4 dogs, all off leash (not allowed) and quite aggressive. I was not happy! Thankfully that was at the beginning of our hike, so it was pleasant after that.

Jorr--LOL!

Jocelyn--So glad you are safe! I can imagine how scary that would be after what you already went though. Glad to hear your little boy is doing well!

BuffaloGirl--Oh you poor thing! Definitely let people wait on you

Scarlett--Happy Anniversary!

Faine--WTG!!!

Sundowner- Sorry to hear about that, but that is great that she has so much support.

Otto--Sounds like your sis will be having a great time!

Rave: Turned in my 2003 Explorer and picked up my new 2006 yesterday, just love it and payments are less $)

Thank you and God Bless our veteran's and anyone serving in military and their families (I will be away next week, so I'm posting today instead)

Rave- DS is finally taking the SATs tomorrow. Good to get it out of the way.

Rant- H.S. boys driving through my neighborhood on Halloween stopped to harass a middle school boy for his candy and when he wouldn't give it up they beat him unconscious. Still in critical condition. Really unbelievable. What idiots!!!

I haven't had time to read all these, but I fully intend to do so later. At this time I would like to share with you some new R&R's. I think this is an important issue.

Rant: Our office bathrooms are being remodeled and one of the plumbers has been quite a bother to a young lady on this floor. It is well known that the plumber is married with kids, yet that means nothing to him. The young lady made it very clear to him that she has a boyfriend, and furthermore she's not interested in a married man. If this guy were smart, he would have left no evidence of this harassment and it would have been her word against his.

Rave: Today that guy really screwed up. He left a very inappropriate message on her voice mail, thus giving her evidence of his inappropriate behavior. She saved the message and filed a formal complaint. The plumber's boss just now heard the message, got quite mad, and assured her that guy won't be bothering her again. I hope they kick this guy to the curb!!

Rant: Traffic and general poor living conditions in the suburbs of New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina. Commuting downtown took 40 minutes pre-storm, and now takes 2 hours.

Rave: Just got a new Nissan Altima which we like (and the gas mileage is definitely easier on the wallet).

Rant: Got an excellent job offer, but would requiring moving ASAP thus forcing me to turn it down.

Rave: Law firms and other practices are starting to come back to downtown New Orleans, indicating that life will come back!

Rant: The New Orleans Parish School Board, which seemed to want to turn down a multi-million dollar grant from the Bill Gates Foundation in order to continue the status quo inept public school situation in the city.

Rave: The New Orleans Parish School Board is going to be under the control of the state, and hopefully that will change the schools for the better.

Rant: The occasional nasty poster on Fodors who goes too far and hurts feelings seemingly for pleasure.

Forgot one quasi rave/rave which I remembered after I read another poster's rant:

Mike Brown of FEMA (who I learned still is on the federal payroll as a "consultant") in e-mails immediately after the hurricane saying he's "trapped" in the city. how did such a loser who couldn't even keep his post as the head of the arabian horse association, get a job that important? the rave part of the post is that the scope of his ineptitude is thoroughly demonstrated by his e-mails. You can go to nola.com, the Times Picayune website, to look at these utterly outrageous and amusing e-mails.

Hi all:
My first (can you believe it!) posting here after reading thousands of posts about all your travels. Hope to be doing more of that now that family issues are resolving.

Rave: we were the luckiest victims of Hurricaine Wilma in South Florida; power only out 10 hours, minimal roof and tree damage.

Rant: driving to work without traffic signals is not my idea of a safe trip.

Rave: second son and fiance finally have wedding date for April in Dominican Republic. Guess will be looking at Caribbean boards soon!. We love our soon-to-be DIL.

Hope to know you better soon

P_M, you are so right. When you leave a voice mail it is admissible in most courts because the person leaving the message knew that his words were being recorded. If he had talked to her on the phone and she was secretly recording the conversation she would most likely have no case, in the eyes of the law anyway. I would fire the guy in a heart beat if I found out about this.

mah1980, Hard to beleive that a school district would not accept a donation to help your schools from the richest man in the world. A town near where I live which has a population of 13,500 will be asked on Tuesday to fund a $67.5 million school rebuilding project which is so over the top it will put many people out of business. Do you have Bill Gates's phone number?

Rave: leaving for Paris in 10 days;

Rant: riots now and a train strike scheduled for the day I leave.

Rave: Fodor friends. A good weekend to all.

jorr,

yes it is hard to believe, but if you are familiar with new orleans politics it actually is par for the course. that's why one of my raves was that the school district looks like it will now be under the thumb of the state instead of local. I think a lot of pressure was put on the school board b/c they relented and unanimously voted to allow the majority of NO schools to become charter schools, thus providing for much more fed. money and the Gates money. Gates' foundation is offering a bunch of money to help build the schools and supply the tech. equipment.

It really is unreal that in a city with as much tourism as NO the majority of the public schools still don't have AC! In fighting and school board corruption have been the mainstay of NO for far too long, and hopefully the hurricane may have a positive impact on that (or so we hope).

The politicians in NO have been held captive for way too long to some of the less desirable citizens that were displayed on the national news in katrina coverage. So real progress in areas which would help many of the same citizens (i.e., good public schools) has been thwarted b/c messing with the NO Parish School Board will have all of those school board members campaigning against a politician.
