first visit where 2 stay
Two families from wales visiting n.y for first time, where is best place 2 stay? Looking at Park Central, Belvedere & the Newton, can anyone help. Also what site to look on for best deals? Any tips of this trip would be great. Thanks.

Hi Dawn, the "best place" to stay really depends on your taste and budget. To start, check hotelkingdon.com placestostay.com and quickbook.com to get an idea what's available and the price ranges. If you can narrow down your choices and post them here, you'll get lots of feedback on a specific hotel. Also, look at citysearch.com and Fodor's "Rants & Raves" to see hotel reviews written by people who have stayed at the properties. If you need deals on airfare try orbitz.com or since it looks like you'd be traveling from the UK, try Virgin Atlantic's website - they have had some wonderful deals this spring on travel between NYC and London.

The Newton is on the upper west side - Broadway between 94th and 95th. Park Central is in midtown - 7th Avenue and 55th ST. THe Belvedere is near Times Square - 48th St. just off 8th Avenue. Have only read good things about the Belvedere on this forum. If I had to make a choice it would be the Belvedere.

Another vote for the Belvedere! Best rates directly on their website or through Turbotrip.com
Another fave-rave is www.portlandsquarehotel.com

Hi, Dawn!
If some of the hotel prices on the internet booking sites are making you gasp, try contacting some of the hotels directly. The Madison, for instance, on 27th and Madison Ave, is nicely located near the Empire State, but to get their great rate of $121 for a room for 4 people, breakfast included, you have to phone them directly. I stayed there last December, when the same room could be had for $88... we were actually able to see New York UNDER our budget, thanks to this hotel. It's not fancy, but it's clean and honest and great value. Check them out on www.madison-hotel.com.
Good luck in whatever you choose.... New York is a GREAT city and you will have a wonderful time. And don't for a moment believe those rumours of New Yorkers being brash or rude or uncaring..... they are, in fact, among the most polite people in the USA.
Last point: have a look at www.bigapplegreeter.org/ before you leave home... this is a great way to begin your tour of New York, and it's quite free. You will even get a free daypass on the subway for everyone in your families, and -- most important -- you will make a friend on your first day!
