Yes aduchamp1-I think we need to start a feature thread titled "Places in NYC for Families of 5 or More". This certainly seems to be a popular topic.
Looks like sportsmom is new to Fodors. Welcome. You can look for topics on Fodors using the search box above. You could also probably do view by state and put in New York. I haven't tried that but I would imagine most of the threads under New York are about NYC. Here is a link to the most recent thread about suites for families. Then you can continue to search for more.
Here's one thread that talks about suite hotels.

Also try http://www.radiocityapts.com. The Affinia group of hotels has suites.

No, VRBO is not the best source for accommodation in NYC, where most apartment rentals (though certainly not all) are illegal. I'd still go with a suite hotel. They exist and are doable depending on the time of the year you're traveling.

I've noticed that Oakwood Corporate Housing has opened up some brand-new buildings near where I live (these are between Park and Madison in the 30s). They also have some other buildings in some places in town. I'm not sure if they will rent for less than a week (nor what the prices are like), but they might be an option for some people. These would be legal rentals, though they may be very pricey indeed, like the Marriott, which charges about $5000 per month for a furnished studio.

I'd suggest either The Travel Inn, which has a pool, and the kids would love that, or The Affinia on E 34th St.
The Affinia is a suite hotel and can accomodate 5, it's on a major cross Street and close to the subway line (Lexington Ave Subway line) and within walking distance of tourist sites and shopping. Also TONS of restaurants in the immediate area as well as 3 large grocery stores.
Have a lovely time while you are here.

Our family of four just stayed at the Blakely a few weeks ago. It's just a few blocks south of Central Park. We had two queen beds in the bedroom and then a large daybed (big enough for our 12-year-old son to sleep on) in the living room. It also had a refrigerator and microwave and two TVs. It worked well for us. Look under my name and you should hopefully find my trip report.

We went to Canal Street the other week for a few things.
Please note that I saw concern in the eyes of little ones. There is mass confusion, mild pushing, a lot of people scurrying about, street vendors hawking, a lot of traffic and the shortest ones feel put upon.
Weekends are probably the worst because they are also market days for many Chinese and there are more visitors.
I would say very early week days and do not buy any illegal goods.
By the way Fuleen Seafood has a great, great $5 luncheon. I am not sure it is available on weekends.
