What do you mean by best? The answer may be different if you're willing to pay $500-1k or more per night compared to $200-$300 range. If your budget is < $150 then you'll likely to need to use priceline or take another step down in quality.

Hi Charlie,
My boyfriend and I drive to NYC several times a year! What a great city! We love The Roosevelt Hotel on the corner of Madison. We love the charm it offers. I just received an email from them on a summer offer. $199 a night and includes there breakfast which is excellent and also a bag lunch? for you to take along with you. Haven't heard of that before but okay. AND if you stay two nights the third if free. That's a good deal! We also liked Le Parker Meridian. Got on Hotwire for $135 a night a year or so ago. Didn't care for Park Central much or Sheraton Towers. We won The Waldorf Astoria for $115 a night over Thanksgiving, which was nice. But we keep going back to the Roosevelt. Just feels like "old" New York.
We love the city! Have fun! Don't miss a lunch or dinner in Little Italy. On the weekend they close down the streets. And also, every Saturday there is a street fair somewhere in the city. Find out where it is, great food and fun walk through. Lots of shirts/sweatshirts/hats, purses, stuff like that! Have fun planning you trip. Tons of helpful suggestions on previous posts. Let me know if I can help.
