LA is a huge place. Where you would stay depends on what you want to do. Most people prefer the western part of town--from West Hollywood, Beverly HIlls to farther west.
You might look at a map and try to decide where you want to go.

Holiday Inn on Highland (Hollywood) is anice hotel w/ a great location. Not sure of your ages or what you like but here are some suggestions:
Griffith Park / Observatory
Santa Monica Pier area
Venice Beach
Rodeo Drive
Walk Hollywood Blvd(Highland area)
Getty Museum

Hi Liana123,
Sunset Blvd. will definitely put you right in the middle of our nightlife, but beware, as cheap hotels up there are really skanky. Maybe joesorce's idea? Or one of the big hotels (e.g. the Standard or the Mondrian) in the center of the action.
Rodeo is dead boring... drive through it and then do your shopping on Melrose Avenue between La Brea & Fairfax (very funky, with fun cafes) or Abbot Kinney in Venice (also funky with great cafes).
