family vacation driving distance from PA
Looking for a family vacation - either resort type or rental property - for June for 5 people. Max. drive 10 hours - we live about 1 hour north of PA. Thought about Maine, but ocean may be too cold then even for my kids. Have done outer banks several times and also Lake Winnipesauke (sp?). Budget of about $1000 for a rental property for a week - maybe a little more.
Any suggestions?!

Help. Still looking for suggestions. Considering TN or GA - mountains somewhere... or on a lake...
I know you Fodorites have some great ideas. We're in Eastern Pennsylvania - about an hour n. of Philadelphia, and are willing to drive up to 10 hours.

Rent a house on the Jersey Shore -- Ocean City if you have older kids or teens, Stone Harbor if you have younger kids.
A cabin or resort on Lake George or Lake Placid. There is an amusement park nearby, and things to do in town.
Timberlock Resort in the Adirondacks (on Indian Lake).

Don't know how old your kids are but if they are old enough for Cedar Point Amustment park in Sandusky Ohio, it's a great place for a couple of days and then you could go to the Erie Islands for a couple of days. Kelly's or Put-in-Bay.

How about Western North Carolina. I have never been with kids but there is Boone and Blowing Rock. Very beautiful mountain destination that isn't as commercialized as Smoky Mountains/Pigeon Forge TN. They have lots of hiking, a very quaint town, and even a small amusement park called Tweetsie Railroad. Another option might be the Asheville North Carolina area. I would google lodging in Blowing Rock and I know you could find some links on condos. The temperatures in June should be good as well.

Lake Keowee is the most beautiful lake I've ever been on and I've seen a few.
It is in northwestern South Carolina.
Rent a house and a boat for a week.
Even though it is South Carolina, because it is in the mountains, it will drop down to the high 60s low 70s at night.
