Hi Rachel! I've stayed at Second Home on Second Avenue 3 times, and think it's a great choice if you want to avoid big tourist hotels. I love the location, there are so many things to see and do, and you are very close to Union Square, so getting around by subway is easy.

I've stayed in the Peruvian Room and the Caribbean single. The Peruvian is a large and pretty room on the second floor, right by the bathroom. It also, unfortunately, shares a wall with the kitchen. Trust me, the noise from the kitchen is much more annoying than any noise from the nightclub or the street. We were awoken early on a Sunday morning by an entire family preparing breakfast! The Caribbean is microscopic and right above the club. You can hear a mild "thump, thump, thump" through the floor, but it's not that bad really. I think if I were to stay there again, I would choose the Caribbean double, it's the same size as the Peruvian, but doesn't share a wall with the kitchen.

Thanks for the weblink, Bo. I had a look after I signed out last night and it was really helpful (was on the net until midnight so feeling a bit tired today!).

Thank you too to Zelda for the info on Second Home.

I've booked the room at East Village Bed and Coffee as they have been great and I've had a couple of personal recommendations from other people on this site who have stayed there. We can cancel a week before at no cost so if something better comes up nearer the time (I will check Priceline!) then we can change our minds.

If any of you ever need any advice on London, then I'm your gal!

Cheers,

Rachel

Rachel -- be sure to eat at one of my favorite (cheaper) places in the East Village -- Miracle Grill on 1st Ave around 9th Street. They have a nice garden in the back. I also love First, it's more pricey, but a nice place for drinks.

If you haven't already gone, rachelb, I have an accomodations suggestion -- the HoJo Express Inn on Houston at Essex. I'm serious. It's where I stay whenever I'm back and can't or would rather not stay with a friend. It's quiet (not the area, certainly, but the rooms, esp. if you're not directly overlooking Houston), cheap, and near everything we young hipsters want, not to mention right above Yonah Schimmel knish.

I really don't think you'll have any safety problems on Ave C, however. Alphabet City used to be sketchy, but no more. I moved from NYC a year ago, and used to walk from the East Village to my home in the West Village all the time, at all hours.
