Uh... I don't get it either. Why not just take the room for the whole day (until the next) and then check out in the evening or after midnight? I, personally, don't know which hotels offer "day rates" here in NYC -- Giuliani probably did away with that ;-)

P.S. Request an early check-in, of course. Most hotels will try to accommodate your request. If you take the room from the night *before* you will, most likely need to check-out by 1:00 the latest. And, uh, well I don't really know how much time you "need".
