How long are you staying? If it's a week, I highly recommend getting a condo from www.vacationbeachrentals.com. Most of their places are in Solana Beach which is next to Del Mar (right near the race track).

How about the Carlsbad Inn? It is only a 3 minute walk to the beach. The town is cute and you can walk to the coaster. I really like this area.
I have taught school in Del Mar for many years and can tell you that there is not much for $200 on the beach. There are only 6 or so hotels. It too is a great town. There are hotels though within walking distance to the beach...Stratford Inn. Hope this helps.

Another thought would be to try http:/www.vrbo.com/ if you are going to stay for more that a couple of nights.

Isn't there a motel right on the beach at Del Mar? I can't remember the name of it. If anyone has actually stayed there, would be interested in opinions.

Yes, you are right. It is right next to the restaurants "The Posideon and Jakes". Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of it and could not find it on trip advisor. If no one here can get it for you, call one of the above restaurants to get the name of it.

The only hotel right on the beach in Carlsbad is the Beach Terrace Inn- havent stayed there- just did a lobby walk through. It used to be a Best Western but looks like it may have changed hands

When are you coming to SD?
If its not in the summer, your odds for getting a $200 room overlooking the ocean are much better..
Summer and Del Mar Racing season are usually sold out till after Labor Day.

across the street from beach Terrace is the Ocean Palms Beach Resort.

Both are conveniently located in the 'Village of Carlsbad'. Nice beach
