Newport/Huntington Beach areas or Del Mar?

My wife and I will have three days over Labor Day that we want to spend on the beach in either Huntington Beach, Newport Beach or Del Mar. We've been to Del Mar before and love it, but we'll be in LA before and after, so we're thinking either of the other two areas are much closer. My wife loves to enter the ocean, so our question is not only how the other two beaches compare to Del Mar, but how easy is it to enter the water for a swim or at least a wade. Do large waves crash close to shore at Huntington and Newport making it difficult to swim or wade? By the way, we know that the water in California can be cool, but that doesn't bother us.

Traffic and crowds are much much worse than Del Mar. Labor Day weekend could well be blazing hot, forcing thousands of teenagers to Huntington & Newport. You might thing about Laguna Beach or Santa Barbara, but if you like Del Mar I'd say it's your best bet.

we stayed at the Courtyard in Del Mar a couple years ago, and it was about a 2 block walk to the beach!! Through the neighborhood and in between houses.

Del Mar is also very, very crowded over Labor Day weekend. In addition to the regular beach crowds, Labor Day weekend is the last weekend of the Del Mar racing season (ends Sept. 8). Because of this, you may have difficulty finding somewhere to stay in Del Mar.

Huntington Beach, aka Surf City, has a marvelous, wide, long beach, with big surfable waves. Newport Beach, on the other hand, offers both open beaches (on the ocean side of Balboa Island, also at Corona del Mar, part of the city) but also protected bay-side beaches on the inner portion of Balboa Island. Thus Newport might give you more variety re beaches; it will definitely give you more variety in terms of restaurants, shopping, other fun things. HB is nice, but compared to NB it has much less going on.

In terms of time, NB is better served by freeways than HB, so while it's farther from the rest of LA, it may not be that much longer to access.

Be prepared for hot and crowded conditions at any SoCal beach over Labor Day; there's no escape.

Thank you all for your replies. We'll likely give Newport a try.
