What's your room budget? What else do you want to see & do besides visit the "JFK site and have a good steak"?
FYI - you can see the Sixth Floor Museum and Dealey Plaza in 2 or 3 hours and most people spend about 60 to 90 minutes or so for dinner at an upscale steak house so that leaves you a lot of time for other things.
There's not much in "downtown" Dallas but office buildings so you'll be doing a lot of driving if you want to see more than the museum so it really doesn't matter if you stay near the Sixth Floor Museum or on the outskirts of town. If you avoid driving during the normal rush hours (7:30 to 9:00AM and 4:30 to 6:00PM) you won't encounter too much traffic - Texas is a car culture so people drive everywhere.
Pick your hotel based on your budget - as long as it's near one of the major arteries you can drive almost anywhere.

I stayed here just after it was renovated and it was amazing. It was quite a while ago, but it still seems to be lovely.

Nothing else planned to Dallas. it's purely part of a stopover with flights. Budget would be great under $200 but may be pushing it. We would probably just wander and do shopping to fill in time. we will only have the one full day to look around. the arrival and departure day will be just that.

Oh for crissakes, can't you look at a map before making ridiculous comments like this?
Perot Museum
DMA
Nasher Sculpture Center
Crow Collection of Asian Art
Meyerson Center
AT&T Performing Arts Center
Klyde Warren Park
Dallas World Aquarium
and, of course, the Book Depository for the JFK assassination obsessives.
For steak:

The link below may help. The area has a shuttle and DART close by. Hotels aren't fancy but may meet your needs.

Oh come on, BigRuss - you need transportation to visit the places you mentioned and OP will need transportation to get to any of the better steak houses- they are not necessarily within walking distance of each other or a hotel near the Sixth Floor Museum & Dealey Plaza and that was my point.
If OP wants to do other things and eat a good steak it doesn't matter too much where she/he stays. OP could even stay at DFW Airport and still be only about a 20 minute drive from the Sixth Floor Museum. So I stand by my statement that OP should pick the hotel based on your budget - as long as it's near one of the major arteries he/she can drive almost anywhere. to see sites, shop and dine.
