I haven't heard anything about Hotel del Sol and I've only seen the Cow Hollow. We have stayed at the Columbus Motor Inn a few times. The Cow Hollow is a sister property to the Columbus and depending on what you are use too as far as neighborhood you may prefer Cow Hollow.
The Columbus is situated in a lower economic residential neighborhood within walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf, Lombard Street, China Town, and North Beach. It is a colorful neighborhood and we love it and will most likely stay there again. But we have seen drug deals right out on the street corner. The have 2 room suites that have 3 queen size beds and the one of the third floor offer views of Coit Tower and Alcatraz off the balcony.
The Cow Hollow is on a main street and a block away is a cute shopping street. They may offer the same type of accomodations as Columbus since they are sister properties. I believe it offers free parking like the Columbus.

Friends stay at the Tuscan Inn (adults only) and love it. It's more upscale. Also, it's on Fisherman's Wharf and therefore a little busier. But lots for a kid -- Wax Museum, Ripleys, sea lions and all of Pier 39, boat to Alcatraz, Hard Rock Cafe, Rain Forest Cafe (your kid will love it) , and all the tacky souvenirs you could ever want, all within walking distance! Hotel del Sol is funky and fun, but not much to walk to in that neighborhood (though good for driving places).

... for what it's worth, we stayed at the Hotel Del Sol in April with two children aged 5 and 8 and I wouldn't recommend it! Definitely the most noisy accommodation I have ever stayed in (traffic and guests). It was clean but the sofa be was on it's last springs. I would not stay there again. The location of the Tuscan Inn (IMHO) is fine. If you can get a good rate take it.
