For hotels, I’d recommend the Mills House (www.millshouse.com) as the hotel building dates back to the Civil War. It is an Intercontinental Hotel (i.e. Holiday Inn) but you’d never know it! Not sure when you’re visiting but I saw a post re: the following special they are running: November 13 - Feb. 16 (excluding Dec. 26 - Dec. 31) for $129 weekday, per night, plus tax and $159 weekend, per night, plus tax.
Phone number is (843) 577-2400 or (800) 874-9600.
For B&B’s, there are many fabulous ones in town but not knowing your budget, I’d recommend the Elliott House Inn (www.elliotthouseinn.com) or The Andrew Pinckney Inn (www.andrewpinckneyinn.com) as both are very nice but fit most folks' budgets.

We spent a long weekend the end of Oct. in Charleston and stayed at the Ansonborough Inn. The room was quite large, the staff very accomodating, great breakfast and afternoon wine and cheese hour. Some folks seem to think it is a little out of the way, but we like to walk and found the two and a half blocks to the market area to not be a problem.

I've used this service a couple of times with very satisfying results.

We stayed at Jasmine House last month. Our room was huge, very nicely furnished. Decent continental breakfast, wine and cheese in the afternoon, even a hot tub in the courtyard. Only downside for us was they really had the a/c cranked down, and we about froze. But, we generally don't use a/c at all, so most people would probably be comfortable.

Postal, aside from what has been recommended, The Doubletree is one of my favorites.
Also, with two kids, you may want to check out the townhouses at The Andrew Pinckney Inn. Excellent location, includes breakfast, and you'll have room to spread out.

Thanks for all Charleston lodging info. Wish I'd had it during my trip there, when i stayed across the river. Now I advise friends to stay right in the historic/downtown area to better get tthe feel of the place.
Mills House also has a current special for $137/night which included breakfast for two in the form of $10/pp copupon for their dining rooms' breakfast. T'girl 67, thanks for mentioning this historic hotel's rates!

On our annual Girls Trip earlier this month, we stayed at Andy Pinckney. $149 per room for one queen bed plus parking. We were "across the street" from the lobby. Parking was a big issue as was our inexperience with bellman's carts - the employee on duty was obviously not in the mood to assist us, so we had a severe Laurel & Hardy moment as the cart went sailing down the street without us. Rooms are small, in my opinion, and bathrooms are too - but they do have TVs and the rooftop terrace was our official hang-out place. It was OK for us (youngest is 34) but might be cramped if you have kids.
