Car rental for young driver

Does anybody know of a car rental agency that will rent (with a supplement I'm sure) to a driver 19 or 20 years old? our son needs to rent a vehicle for 4 hours or so once a week. thanks -

I don;t know of any major company that will rent to under 21's - and usually under 25 is a premium.

Three options:

Try the local rent-a-wreck

Try other local rather than national companies - if they have any in yor area

You - or some other relative or friend if you're not nearby - rent the car and use it yourself while you lend him yours (this should also be cheaper than his renting it - IF anyone will do it)

It is possible, but expensive. Our 20 yo DD had flight induced Bell's palsy on a flight to CA. She didn't want to fly home, understandably, so she rented a car. If you can make the transaction with your son, it might be easier. Check all the major rental companies' websites and read their policy about renting to a young driver. Then phone the local company to see what kind of deal you can work out. Good luck!

Try U-Haul. They have pickups for rent by the hour. Not sure of the age limit.

Some colleges have deals for their students to be able to rent cars. I don't know if your son is a student but maybe there's a way to use that if there's something like that available in your area.

Also, it looks like in some places Dollar will rent to 18-year-olds. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to say on their website which locations, so you might check with your local dealer.

Good luck!

Being under 25 myself I can tell you it is REALLY hard to find them. And to be honest it all depends what city/state you are in. Some state laws won't allow you (a lot in the northeast), while others will and you pay a HUGE premium. For example, I rented a car with dollar for $18 a day and had to pay an extra $20 a day because I was under 25.

thanks for all the ideas. turns out U-Haul will rent to anyone over the age of 18 with a valid driver's license. The rate is $20/day which is reasonable and the mileage charge isn't going to be too bad..unless he drives more than we've been told!
