Aspen: Help with condo for fall
I've checked with tripadvisor and previous postings on this forum for help with either Aspen Square or Lift One condos, but those are getting rather dated. Does anyone have any current experience with either of these places? Our trip will be in late September.
The Gant looks great as well, but it's a bit over our budget of about $200 a night total. We're 4 adults looking for a 2 or 3 bedroom. Any other suggestions are welcome.
Thanks so much!

We've stayed at both Aspen Square and The Gant, although it's been two years since we've been in Aspen. I'd be surprised if Aspen Square management lets it become dated. It's right in the heart of downtown Aspen, and very stylish. I'd also be surprised if it's less than $200 night! But maybe if it's after the musical events and before the snow flies. . .
The Gant is also very nice-- we prefer its more 'woodsy' location a few blocks out of town, but an easy walk. Also surprising if less than $200, though. Expedia once gave me an amazing rate at The Gant, so its worth a try.
If you could get either of those two places for your budget, jump on the deal.
We also stayed a couple of nights at a Frias Properties place, called Chateau Dumont, also in downtown Aspen. It is not in the league of the other two places, though, a bit shabby individually owned places. Might be worth a try, though.
I think you'll enjoy staying in Aspen itself, and going for the best you can find in town, as opposed to going out to Snowmass--IMHO.

Thanks Maureen for your quick reply. The rates I've been quoted for The Gant are $190 (standard) and $220 (deluxe); for Aspen Square it's $215 (we could probably do that); and for Lift One $166.
I'll try the others you mentioned as well.

Those sound like great rates. I'd suggest you take The Gant or Aspen Square (have only seen Lift One from the outside) to nab those rates, and not bother with the other, as it wasn't nearly as nice.
Aspen Square, like I said, is more contemporary and stylish, right in the middle of town and shops, marble baths in some, views of the mountain from some, small workout facility, etc. The Gant is wooden construction, more "Colorado-like", nice tennis courts (for a fee) two nice outdoor pools set in the trees, workout facility, shuttles to town, decks with views, etc.
Can't go wrong with the prices you quoted for either. I think the difference between standard and deluxe at The Gant is in the quality of furnishings, no? Go for it-- you'll love Aspen.

Just in case anyone else is interested in The Gant for this fall, I just received an email from them. Half of their units will be under construction (major renovation) starting this fall for the next 3 years. They were honest enough to say there would be lots of noise, but if we were interested they'd put us on the far side but there would still be noise.
So I think we'll opt for the Aspen Square. Too many choices to go with a place that's under construction.

I realize you specifically asked for condo info but thought I would offer this - I stayed at The Durant in the fall and got a rate of $79 ! The room has small frig and mwave, nice breakfast adn wine/cheese in the afternoon. Small, quiet. Very ncie - and you can't beat the $$. Here is their web site: http://www.durantaspen.com/

Thanks for the suggestion, flbronc. I checked their website and it does look nice. However, the prices are much higher than $79 - and that's the main reason we're looking at condos. For two rooms, it's cheaper to go the condo route, plus you get more space. But thanks for your reply.

kopp, thanks for the info. re: construction at The Gant. I also recommended it to my sister-in-law for this August, so I'll pass that along. You're smart to avoid it, just in case. We were there once when they were painting the exterior, thinking it wouldn't be a big deal. But wouldn't you know, they were spray painting the building we were in, and for one full day our deck windows were draped in plastic which totally obliterated our view. I did complain to management and they comped us one day's rent, but still you can't recover vacation days with money.
I think you'll like Aspen Square. It's a special place, too.

kopp, we just returned from a four-night stay at Aspen Square. I have to say I was disappointed in them, because we were given a two bdrm/two bath unit that was VERY dated. It looked like it was last decorated in the 70s, and things were pretty ratty. The other two times we stayed at Aspen Square, we had a two bdrm/two bath unit that was spectacular-- marble bathrooms, granite kitchen, new maple cabinets, new furniture, etc. So, we thought all their units were that nice.
But, we were given our choice between two equally ratty units, and one was on the first floor with the street right outside the patio door. The unit we had as 135-- not good. The unit next door, 134, is the very nice marble and granite two bedroom/two bath. When I asked management if we could move for our last nights, I was told no way, they were booked solid, and had some 'very special' people coming in (made me feel like we didn't rate the good room). I asked about prices, and it made me mad that our ratty unit cost as much as the super deluxe unit next door. I like the way The Gant prices better-- standard, deluxe and superior-- much more fair. Management was not very helpful or friendly when I expressed my dismay about paying as much as the nicer unit, when our oven didn't work, cabinet doors were sprung, furniture was worn, etc. They simply told me I should have asked for a recently renovated one-- as though I was supposed to know that. So, if you stay at Aspen Square, just specify you want a newly-renovated unit. And good luck.
I did pick up a brochure from another place which looked nice, so if you're still looking, post again and I can find the name and number for you. The front desk man said their two bedroom unit has three baths, two fireplaces, and was just $20 more per night than we were paying at Aspen Square. Another problem with our unit at Aspen Square was that the unit next door was being gutted, and they'd start working some mornings as early as 7:00. Also, street noise was very loud in our corner unit.
Oh, well, the weather was beautiful, our raft trip was a blast (Colorado Whitewater company), and we love Aspen.
For all those who think Aspen is only glitzy and glamorous, it is not that way at all. It is very friendly and down-home Colorado, even though Prada and Gucci are there.

Hi Maureen, that's quite a story about the Aspen Square, especially when they said you should have requested a renovated room. Yeah, like you should have known to ask, lol!
We took our Colorado trip last September ('05), but it's good to have this info for future trips.
As it turned out, we didn't even get to Aspen. After 10 days, my mom had a health issue which necessitated us cutting short the trip. Fortunately, the rest of our reservations were able to be cancelled. DH and I plan to go back and finish it up, so we'll try the Aspen Square then.
I posted a trip report back in October, if you're interested (Colorado Road Trip: Oh, those beautiful Aspens). I'd give you the link if I knew how.

I'm sorry to hear you didn't get to Aspen. It is a wonderful place.
ResortQuest is the company whose brochure picked up. They have a four-level grading system on their places, which is what I think Aspen Square should do. They had three condo complexes right at the base of Aspen mountain which all looked quite nice.
I hope you make it to Aspen sometime soon!
