Anchorage hotels and train

The Holiday Inn was just fine. There was a nice restaurant there and for convenience sake, it was perfect to catch the train. If Dallasite prefers, I believe there is a Hilton downtown they can stay at if they want to pay those prices that is also close to the train. Is a Comfort Inn better than a Holiday Inn?

Ít's amazing how people like Gardyloo is stupid enough to waste time posting a stupid reply. Holiday Inn is what it is, and we all know it sets a standard for your money. Bitchy people like him should stay at the overpriced hotels - just for the sake of it - and do not bother checking forums like this, where we - ordinary people - exchange useful information and experiences.

Fo-Tonelli - The Holiday Inn faces what used to be a rather crummy stretch of 3rd Avenue. One floor's bedrooms were at ground level on 3rd, and were regularly broken into by people on the street. A business colleague of mine opened the door to one of these rooms and found a dead body in it - he had come through the window and not checked out - er, rather he had checked out. The rooms were old, dingy, damp and/or really cold, the hall carpet sticky. The only really good things were the snacks in the bar during happy hour. The management seemed to rely too much on the name recognition of Holiday Inn, rather than seeking to offer a better product.
It may have improved, but as of last week it still looked pretty second rate.
The new Marriott looks great; not too close to the train station, but still a short cab ride.
People are paying too much for hotels in Anchorage in the first place. They ought to look for value for their money.

The Hilton is also within walking distance of the train station. I stayed there for a week last summer and although my room was tiny, it was very clean and comfortable. The hotel bar is very popular for happy hour.
I'll agree that the Holiday Inn is NOT nice. Third Avenue is a rough street, especially down where the HI is located.

I also agree you should avoid the Holiday Inn if possible. I've stayed at Comfort Inn and it was fine except for the train noises. The Hilton is right near the Holiday Inn and a far better and safer place. As previous posters have said, Holiday Inn can be a risk.

Sorry to hear the Holiday Inn has gone down so badly. I stayed there a couple of years ago and had no problems as the ones described. I also stayed at the Spring Hill Suites which is not downtown, but is very nice. It is a short cab from the train station.

Before I read most of the postings on this site, I had already made reservations at the Holiday Inn for two rooms. We found it to be fine ? pretty much a typical Holiday Inn. Maybe we just hit it lucky (it was a Saturday night), but the only problem we had was that somebody in the parking lot had a radio with one of those reverberators (or whatever they're called) going for about half an hour at 3:30 a.m. I'm not sure the HI or the neighborhood can be blamed for that.
