5 hour layover in Miami ideas?

My husband and I will have a five hour layover at Miami airport in the afternoon. We would love to get a quick taste of South Beach. Any thoughts on where to go, how long it would take, is it possible?

International Flight or Domestic?

Might have time for South Beach or a taste of some Cuban food somewhere.

All the stars must align to be possible. If you are arriving international and your flight is on time, an hour to clear customs and recheck your bags is usual and often is more. If either direction of your race to South Beach is at rush hour, an hour drive is probable. You will have to be back at MIA at least an hour to clear TSA for your next flight. If the stars align you will have two hours at most. If they do not, it's not worth the stress or risk you will miss your next flight.

We have not flown to Miami in at least five years since it is
the worst American airport for changing from a domestic to international flight.

I am hopeful things have improved, otherwise the TSA lines are long and slow and customs is a disaster.

Traffic from 4pm on is a parking lot between the airport and South Beach... good luck...

You can't really get a good flavor of Miami or Miami Beach without spending more time there. I actually enjoy spending time in the airport because it presents a totally different experience - much more Latin than any other American airport. Grab a Cafe Cubano, pair it with a Medianoche and enjoy the show.

I'd be very surprised if you can do anything with your 5-hour layover. I'd stay in the terminal if it were mine.

I would relax in the airport as suggested. Not really enough time to get to Sobe and back and see anything. Save it for at least an overnight. Sometimes when needing to fly through Miami that is just what we do...book our second flight next a.m. And rent a car, have a great dinner, stay at The Hotel of Southbeach or one of the nice hotels near the airport, etc. That being said, with time on your hands you could get to terminal D (american airline) and pick up something to eat at The Icebox Cafe at D8. Icebox is a wonderful cafe located just off Lincoln Road in South Beach. So at least you can experience some good food, or even better, one of their delicious desserts.

Hope all your travels go smoothly.

Thanks everyone! We have decided to take all of your advice and just stay at the airport. We will check out the Icebox - thanks for that tip. Next time we will book an overnight. Thanks again!
