what to do with a 7 hour layover in Miami?

My husband and I (mid 50's) will have a long layover in Miami on our way to Peru, arriving at 3pm and leaving at 11pm. Any suggestions of an interesting way to kill time? We won't be encumbered by luggage, and have never been to Miami. Maybe a great restaurant not too far away from Mia??thanks!

I would take a taxi at the airport , there is a flat fee to go to different areas, I would head to South Beach,
otherwise called the Art Deco District. It is a small piece of real state located at the South tip of the Island of Miami Beach. There are two main peatonals one is Ocean Drive by the sea shore, between 5 th street and 15 th street , the other one is Lincoln Rd which is perpendicular. You can have dinner in several fashionable restaurants along both pedestrian ways but I would go to Joe Stone Crab in order to avoid inevitable waits I would go for an early as possible dinner.
Joe Stone Crab is a well known restaurant, for sure the best known restaurant in Miami, if the stone crabs are in season they are a must, is they are not in season there are other alternatives. The signature desert is Key LIme Pie.
After dinner I would walk along both Ocean Drive and Lincoln Rd., may be having coffe or dessert or both in one of the many cafes in those two ways.
Any hotel would call gladly a taxi for you to get in due time to the airport.
There is more to Miami that South Beach, but considering the time of day you will be here and also that you have no car this is the best deal for me. I hope you enjoy your stay in Miami.

Miami is one of the worst airports I have encountered. Be sure to be back at least two hours ahead of time, security is plan awful.

And when you return from Peru and have to catch you connecting flight be sure you have tine to re-enter through security after customs.

This night have changed in the last few years but I have long avoided this airport, especially for international flights.

Make your next flight, barely. Actually, it's not far from downtown so cabbing to and fro won't be hard.

On re-entry to the US, you'll find out MIA is the US equivalent of CDG. I hope you're not flying back through there -- that'll really suck.

Hi , it is me again, I woke up early ,have to catch an early flight to New York. I agree with the above our airport is no good. It is not an airport you will love, but you can catch a taxi and do as I suggested. Have a good time.

thanks for all of your comments. South Beach sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately we are returning via Miami, there is no way around doing so!
