How to spend the afternoon in Miami?

We are flying to South America and our flights are such that we have a massive layover in Miami...about 12 hours. We figured we would rent a car and drive into town and hang out. Any suggestions? I was thinking of lunch in South Beach and then just strolling around and grabbing dinner somewhere as well before heading back to the airport for our overnight flight.

Thanks for any ideas.

there arev really three places to consider: 1. South Beach/Licoln Roasd mall which are near each other. 2 Coconut Grove and 3. Coral Gables. Coconut Grove is just south of Miami of the water. Coral gables is about 15-20 minutes from Miami, closer to the airport. The Gables is more laid back and more upscale than the first two areas.

If you decide to visit SoBe, News Cafe (somewhere around 8th and Ocean, I think) is a perfect spot for semi-cheap food and excellent people-watching/celeb-spotting.

I think I would avoid renting a car and take a cab! I hate driving in Miami, grrrr.
