I found this thread a bit late. When I was visiting a friend in Beijing many years ago, he took me down to some weird market (by googling, I found out that its called wang fu jing?). They sold all different types of cockroaches, insects, scorpions, etc.
Being quite picky when it comes to food, I really had no interesting in eating any of that...but I hate a scorpion, which I instantly started to regret. It did not only taste bad (like a overcooked and deep friend chicken thing from KFC), but it was just disgusting.
On the other hand, I can also remind people of being careful when eating exotic stuff abroad. Having traveled to Asia a lot, I know that things can go really bad for some people. Reading the stories in this article (underneath the tips) can really make you think that you should stay safe when traveling to "exotic" countries

I don't care for durian at all but it's hard to think of it as adventurous when our local supermarkets all carry it in the produce section. We cook kangaroo all the time at home. Healthy and really tasty when cooked right (fast over high heat)
Toasted crickets in Mexico and fried spiders in Cambodia were both weird in texture. Not things I'd buy by the bag.
crellston, I've made a note on that soup for when we get back to VN.
