I'm traveling to SC in a couple of weeks to get my things out of storage and have it shipped to TX where I live now. This is going to be a pricey trip which I am paying for, not an employer paying relocation expenses.

In the past, I have used the name your own price option on Priceline, but am wondering if there might be other sites out there that might be better when it comes to price. I really am hoping to pay not more than $40.00 - $50.00 a night, tax included. I'm not looking for a dump of course, as I am a woman traveling alone, but have no problems with Super 8's or Comfort Inns and hotels of that type.

Let us know what cities you're anticipating staying in and we may know the best place to stay. I traveled The South extensively when I worked and know the cities from SC to Dallas.

I assume you'll be coming through Atlanta and may hit Mississippi the first night? ATL rush hr. is to be avoided.

FYI: I now use ChoiceHotels.com and Booking.com for most places I stay in.

The only thing I know for sure it Greenville SC where I will be staying for close to two weeks, with a couple days away in between. There is a good chance I might just sleep in my car on the way there and back.

Well, I checked out booking.com and found some good possibilities. I then checked out a couple of them on Trip Advisor and searched the best price and the prices shown were less than booking.com. I called the property to double check to make sure there was a fridge and micro in the room and they quoted me a higher price. When I told them the price on saw on TA, they matched it. I'm happy.

I would agree with the others. Booking.com and laterooms.com are excellent websites which have loads of options and are well reviewed. You might also consider just looking at travel blogs like blogcheaptravel.com and nomadicmatt. You can find some cheap places if you browse through them and they usually have more realistic, fair reviews. However, I would ultimately recommend hostels if you want somewhere cheap to stay. They have changed a lot over recent years and are now clean, trendy and sociable.

Another site I like is eurocheapo.com, which combines several other sites, including venere.com and booking.com

I have used booking.com for travel in South America but recently discovered that if the hotel neglects to log you as arrived, booking.com will send you an email that you are a "no show" and you risk being double charged. If you pay with a credit card there shouldn't be an issue but if you pay in cash, could be a problem.

Luckily I had not actually left town and went back to the hotel and had a conversation that cleared things up, but it has put me off using booking.com under the "pay later" option.

I would encourage you to join Choice Privileges and stay two nights in an EconoLodge or Rodeway before you get to SC.
You should be able to get a room for 8K or 10K points after 2 paid stays.
Hotels dot com also has some rooms on sale.

Maybe a crazy idea, but check and see if there are Kamping Kabins at KOAs along the way or during the trip. Also look at state park cabins.
