July vs. August travel
I have an opportunity to travel this summer - I realize June or September would be better but I can't in those months. I was just looking for an opinion on when to go. If I were to go in July, it would be mid-July. Or anytime in August. I realize it'll be hot and crowded and more expensive in these months. But generally, which would work out better?
I'd be going to Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague and Rome. The trip would be around 3 weeks.

Late August cools off in many places. It's usually the first half of August when most of Europe seems to be on vacation. Major cities usually don't have an off season unless it's dead of winter. They are busy year round although you might find cheaper hotel rates in late July or early August for Rome. Venice and Rome seem to have discounts at those times.

Actually many hotels offer special summer rates starting sometimes in mid july and in august as business travel goes down so vacancy goes up.. I often travel in summer and enjoy those lower rates, best to book well in advance to get them though. I have been hot and cold in both july and august , so don't count on the weather being anything, its Russian roulette. lol
Rome on the other hand, it will be hot as hades, theres no chance you will encounter cool and rainy weather there like I did in Paris one august.. so keep that in mind.. nothing to be done about it, I have been to rome in summer too, I just put up with it and made sure I got a hotel with a/c.

August isn't usually hotter than July, in some places July is th e hottest month of the year (most places, probably).
I prefer July but it has nothing to do with the weather, it is because August is a dead month in most any city in terms of what is going on, at least performing arts or concerts/recitals. If you don't care about that and don't want to attend any performance, it doesn't matter much.
Because August is about the deadest season for business travel, many hotels do offer discounts in that month in lots of cities. I don't know about Rome, but I know they do in some others like Paris and Prague, and London.
Why would you think it would be more expensive in August, anyway? I can't think of any reason why that would be true.
