While these apartments seem to vary in quality, can you help me with the locations of each. We are looking at spending about 4 weeks in Sept. so we willnot be rushing around trying to see things. We'd like to be close to a food store, maybe some simple restaurants, close to public transit and have a homey feel.

Based on earlier advice here, we were trying to target Plateau area or maybe Outremont. I don't really know how close these apartments are to tehse areas.

I'd personally go with the first for the overall ambience, although I think you'd be fine with any of these four. First is in the Plateau; second is downtown; third is in Westmount; the last is in NDG (Notre-Dame-de-Grace).

First is a more French-speaking area. The last two especially are quieter (which may appeal) more English-speaking parts of the city, all three would give you your "homey" feel. Westmount is a bit more central than NDG. Downtown is more businessy, although closest to Old Montreal, and I think would give you the least "homey" feel.

Monkland Avenue and Sherbrooke Avenue are where you'd head for groceries, restaurants if you go with the NDG option.

the first is definitely the one you want if interested in exploring the Plateau and Outremont neighborhoods. It would be the one I would choose for a one month stay (I am envious of your plan to explore the city that long). As Daniel_Williams noted, you should expect more of a predominantly French speaking population in that neighborhood than the others.

Ok, I hope this is the last of the apts I am considering. I would appreciate again any opinions.

Locations:

#1 Snowdon-Cote des Neiges. I lived near here for a number of years. Its advantage is it's on both the orange and blue metro lines; there are some truly beautiful homes the other side of Queen Mary Blvd. More immigrant, English more common than French here. The nearby main drag Queen Mary has plenty of amenities; I always found the area a bit lacking in joie de vivre (perhaps due to the roaring Decarie Expressway that's right nearby that tore the neighborhood in half).

The drag for me was no matter how I did it, it was half an hour or more to go see my friends in the Plateau on transit/by bike.

#2 St. Urbain near Ontario

#3 Sherbrooke & St. Laurent.

These two are good. Both #2 and #3 are quite central to downtown and the Plateau. They say #3 is at a very central intersection, which might be a bit busy. I've never seen the home oddly enough. You'd probably shop at the grocery store on Jeanne Mance & Sherbrooke for these two.

#4 Rosemont. Perhaps an OK area; tough to tell though as they were kind of vague about the location.

#5 near Jean Talon market. A friend of mine lived around here and she & I liked the vibe of the neighbourhood. A lot of people who couldn't afford or find digs in the Plateau end up here. I'd be happy here for a few weeks.

Having lived in Montreal for over 50 yrs, I would suggest Atwater market- old Montreal or downtown.
Lots to do, see, easy access to markets and restaurants.

Ok, change in plans. We are now going to spend only a week inMontreal

I think you will really enjoy the neighborhood. Despite the "ghetto" nickname, this is a nice residential neighborhood, convenient to downtown and to the Plateau

Okay - again, I hope this is the last time I bother you all for apt advice! While I love the one in the McGill ghetto, our DDs have decided to join us for a couple days and I'm unsure if it will accommodate.

What are your opinions of the two above?

Terrific locations near Mont-Royal metro.

I agree that both apartments have good locations. Interesting area to walk around and very near the metro for access to other parts of the city.
