Quaint hotels in Puerto Vallarta
Here're some of my favorites, they are all in "old town south of the river" or El Centro, price ranges $50-75US/night:

Actually I exclude Hotel Playa Los Arcos from my list(s) intentionally. I have heard several recent first-hand, less than favorable reviews and experiences from people who stayed there. I've walked thru their grounds many many times. It IS on the beach, so that's a plus. And if you DO choose to stay there get a room overlooking the beach or pool (more $) not on the street side of Olas Altas, which can get very noisy at night.
If you're looking for a "normal" middle of the road beach front hotel, I'd recommend Tropicana over Los Arcos. And if you can spend a bit more money, then I suggest Molino de Agua.

For Don, I think Molino de Agua is a fantastic hotel! I didn't list it only because, I believe, most rooms are in the well-over $100US range. Gorgeous grounds, right on the river & the sea, large walled property that used to be a mango grove. They offer cabins, ocean "view", and ocean front rooms. The ocean front suites are very large rooms in 2-story brick building, with slate floor, private balconies overloooking the beach and ocean, nice furnishings. They have a website but it does an awful job (photo-wise) of showing the place off to its best. Also two huge wonderful pools, a couple restaurants (some years run better than others it seems). Right in the heart of town, perfect, yet peaceful location.
